TikTok and parent company ByteDance are facing a crucial court hearing on Monday in a legal battle to prevent a law that could potentially ban the app in the US by January 19, affecting 170 million American users.
The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia will hear oral arguments regarding the legal challenge, placing the Chinese-owned TikTok amidst the final stages of the 2024 presidential election.
Both Republican candidate Donald Trump and Vice-president Kamala Harris are actively using TikTok to engage with younger voters, emphasizing the platform’s political significance.
TikTok and ByteDance contend that the law is unconstitutional and violates Americans’ freedom of speech, characterizing it as a departure from the country’s tradition of supporting an open internet.
The law was introduced in response to concerns that China could potentially access American data or conduct surveillance through the app, leading to its overwhelming passage in the US Congress in April.
