SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn crew, led by billionaire Jared Isaacman, recently completed a historic mission, marking the world’s first commercial spacewalk. The four-member civilian team returned to Earth after five days in orbit, splashing down off the coast of Florida. During the mission, the crew conducted over 40 experiments and even performed a spacewalk, a feat previously achieved only by astronauts from government-funded space agencies.
The crew, including retired US Air Force pilot Scott Poteet, and SpaceX employees Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, pushed the boundaries of space exploration by traveling further than any humans in over fifty years. Isaacman and Gillis made history as the first non-professional crew to perform a spacewalk, floating 435 miles above the Earth.
The mission also made strides in using innovative technology, including astronaut suits with new features and testing intersatellite laser communication. Additionally, the crew raised funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and performed a musical piece from space. Polaris Dawn is just the beginning of a series of planned missions, including the first manned flight of SpaceX’s new Starship rocket.
