Shanghai Prepares for Strongest Storm Since 1949
Shanghai is bracing for Typhoon Bebinca, which could be the most powerful storm to hit the Chinese financial hub since 1949. The Category 1 typhoon, with sustained wind speeds of 144km/h, is expected to make landfall along China’s eastern coast after midnight on Monday.
The China Meteorological Administration issued a typhoon red alert, warning of gales and heavy rainfall in eastern China. All flights at Shanghai’s airports have been cancelled, and train services have been suspended to ensure passenger safety.
Resorts, including Shanghai Disney Resort, have been closed temporarily, and ferry services to and from Chongming Island have been halted. In Zhejiang, ships have been recalled, and parks in Hangzhou have announced closures as a precaution.
Typhoon Bebinca’s arrival coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival, a three-day holiday in China. The storm has already caused fatalities in the Philippines, with falling trees claiming six lives.
