Philippines Deploy New Vessel in South China Sea
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel, BRP Teresa Magbanua, has left Sabina Shoal in the South China Sea after months of asserting Philippine claims in the disputed area. A new vessel will be deployed immediately to replace it, as announced by Philippine officials. This move is likely to upset China, which claims sovereignty over the area.
BRP Teresa Magbanua had been stationed at Sabina Shoal since April to prevent China from seizing the area within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed the vessel’s return for crew medical needs and repairs.
NMC spokesperson Alexander Lopez revealed that another vessel will take over the patrol, ensuring a continuous Philippine presence in the region. Tensions have escalated with recent collisions between Philippine and Chinese vessels near Sabina Shoal, including one in August that damaged the Teresa Magbanua.
The deployment of a new vessel signals the Philippines’ commitment to defending its territorial claims despite Beijing’s objections. The situation echoes past maritime standoffs and underscores the ongoing tensions in the South China Sea.
