Jordan’s King Abdullah II has appointed Jafar Hassan as the kingdom’s new prime minister after Bisher Khasawneh’s resignation following a parliamentary election. Hassan, 56, previously served as planning minister and chief of staff to the king. The king called on Hassan to support the Palestinian people in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem by mobilizing efforts through Arab and international movements.
Jordanians recently participated in the first general election under a new electoral law aiming to increase the role of political parties in the parliament. Despite the Islamic Action Front (IAF) winning up to a fifth of the seats, the tribal and pro-government factions still hold significant power. The revamped law is meant to diminish tribal influence and strengthen political parties, yet voter apathy was apparent with only a 32 percent turnout among eligible voters.
