After months of denials, the Israeli military has acknowledged a “high probability” that its air strike resulted in the deaths of three Israeli captives in Gaza last November.
The bodies of Corporal Nik Beizer, Sergeant Ron Sherman, and French-Israeli national Elia Toledano were found in a tunnel on December 14, with the cause of death initially unknown.
An investigation revealed that the captives were held in a tunnel complex operated by Hamas commander Ahmed Ghandour, who was the target of the air strike. The military claimed they were unaware of the hostages’ presence at the time of the attack.
The report’s inconclusive findings may increase pressure on the Israeli government to negotiate the release of remaining captives held by Hamas.
