The Ministry of Development in Greece has announced a 5% to 10% decrease in the cost of school supplies as part of efforts to combat inflation and promote fair market competition. The initiative, known as the “Student Basket,” aims to reduce prices for key school items until October 15.
Inspections are currently underway at 26 supermarkets and suppliers to ensure compliance with regulations, with fines of up to 6 million euros for violations. Despite challenges in shipping and high transport costs, supermarket chains are supporting families by reducing school supply prices by up to 10%.
Minister Takis Theodorikakos emphasized the importance of maintaining strict profit margin regulations while also noting a decrease in food and essential goods prices for the fourth consecutive month. This commitment to affordability places pressure on supermarket profits, but it is seen as part of their social responsibility.
The General Director of the Hellenic Supermarket Association, Apostolos Petalas, highlighted the understanding of the need to support families with school-aged children, despite the financial impact on supermarkets.
