Escape of 274 Inmates in Nigeria Due to Floods
In a shocking incident, 274 jail inmates at the Medium Correctional Centre in Maiduguri, Nigeria, escaped due to a collapsed wall caused by heavy flooding. The inmates took advantage of the collapsed walls to flee the old prison in Maiduguri.
Initially, 281 inmates were discovered missing, but seven were later apprehended, leaving 274 still at large. The Nigeria Correctional Service is working with other security agencies to capture the remaining escapees.
Massive floods on Sept. 10 devastated Maiduguri, causing damage to various establishments and displacing over one million people. The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed 37 deaths and 58 injuries due to the floods.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo described the flooding as devastating during his visit to the affected area. The escape of the inmates adds to the challenges faced by the region in the aftermath of the floods.
