A tragic incident in Haiti claimed the lives of at least 24 people as a fuel truck exploded in the country’s southern peninsula, leaving half of the 40 survivors with severe burns. Prime Minister Garry Conille visited the site near Miragoane to oversee the evacuation of the most critically injured victims.
Ambulances rushed to the scene to attend to those with severe burns, while helicopters transported some victims for specialized care. The injured, mostly men along with three women and a child, were left in critical condition. The incident was described as “horrible” by the government.
Reports indicated that another 15 people suffered second-degree burns in the explosion caused when the fuel truck’s gas tank was punctured in a rush to collect fuel. Sadly, a similar incident in Cap-Haitien claimed 60 lives in 2021, emphasizing the dangers of such situations.
The humanitarian crisis in Haiti has worsened due to gang activity in the capital, leading to mass displacements, sexual violence, and widespread hunger. A state of emergency has been declared nationwide to address the escalating situation.
