Amid heightened tensions between Venezuela and the United States and Spain over the disputed presidential election, six foreign nationals were detained on suspicion of plotting against President Maduro’s government. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello claimed the detainees had links to intelligence agencies in the US and Spain, as well as Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. Despite the accusations, the US government denied any involvement in the alleged plot.
Spain and the Czech Republic have yet to react to the claims, as relations between Maduro’s government and Western powers continue to deteriorate. Following the contentious election, mass opposition protests erupted, resulting in casualties and arrests. Opposition leader Machado has called for further demonstrations to demand international recognition for the opposition candidate who went into exile in Spain.
Maduro, who succeeded Hugo Chavez in 2013, has faced criticism for his administration’s handling of the economy, leading to a significant emigration crisis. The ongoing political tensions and international scrutiny surrounding the election have further strained relations between Venezuela and Western nations.
