Tragedy Strikes as Tanker Truck Explodes in Haiti, Killing 24
In a devastating incident in Miragoane, southwestern Haiti, a tanker truck explosion claimed the lives of 24 individuals, with around 40 others sustaining injuries. Witness reports suggest that the victims were attempting to collect fuel leaking from the vehicle prior to the explosion.
Emmanuel Pierre, the head of Haiti’s civil protection agency, confirmed the rising death toll and the severity of injuries, with some victims suffering burns over most of their bodies. The injured were rushed to Sainte Therese Hospital in Miragoane, while some were later transferred to specialized hospitals in Port-au-Prince.
Interim Prime Minister Garry Conille called for an emergency government meeting to address the aftermath of the tragedy. Haiti, plagued by instability and gang violence, received a promise of $45 million in aid from US diplomat Anthony Blinken, emphasizing the urgent need for elections and the deployment of a Kenya-led police force to stabilize the region.
