The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission of the U.S. Congress is set to address the ethnic cleansing committed by Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, according to a press release. Following Azerbaijan’s military operation to take control of Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023, the situation for ethnic Armenians in the region drastically changed, leading to mass displacement to Armenia. The upcoming hearing will focus on the alleged ethnic cleansing and related issues such as the treatment of prisoners of war, status of Armenian cultural sites, and the right of ethnic Armenians to return to Nagorno-Karabakh.
Furthermore, the commission will discuss Azerbaijan’s poor human rights record, as highlighted in a report by Freedom House. The hearing will also explore the government’s treatment of ethnic Azerbaijanis who oppose its policies, as well as the correlation between corruption and human rights violations. Witnesses will provide recommendations to Congress during the hearing, which is open to Members of Congress, congressional staff, the public, and media.
Congressional Co-Chairs Chris Smith and James McGovern will host the hearing in person.
