South Sudan Unity Government Extends Transitional Period
The government of South Sudan has announced a two-year extension of the transitional period, delaying the scheduled elections from December to December 22, 2026. This decision was made to allow for the implementation of critical protocols in the peace agreement, including the permanent Constitution process, census, and registration of political parties.
Minister of Cabinet Affairs Martin Elia Lomuro emphasized the importance of completing essential tasks before holding elections and assured the South Sudanese people that the government will continue to function during this extended period. The presidency also highlighted the need to mobilize funds for the effective implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
The peace deal, signed in 2018, brought together rival Riek Machar and other political parties with President Kiir to form a unity government in 2020. The government remains committed to achieving long-term peace and stability in South Sudan.
