South Korea has declared a special two-week emergency medical response period in September due to a strike by young doctors putting strain on the medical system. The government announced measures to ensure services, including temporarily increasing doctors’ fees to show appreciation for their dedication.

The Health Ministry deployed military doctors to assist in hospital emergency rooms to address the shortage of medical staff. Despite challenges, the government assured that South Korea is not facing a medical collapse.

The strike was triggered by a plan to increase medical student numbers to address a projected doctor shortage. This has led to hospitals facing staff shortages and turning away patients in emergency rooms. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo emphasized the importance of maintaining healthcare services during the upcoming Chuseok holiday.

Overall, efforts are being made to manage the situation to ensure continued medical assistance for the population.
