Ukraine and Russia Swap Prisoners in UAE-Mediated Exchange
Over the weekend, Moscow and Kyiv exchanged 103 prisoners of war each in a deal facilitated by the United Arab Emirates. The swap occurred following Ukraine’s incursion into the Kursk region, with captives being returned by both sides.
Both Ukrainians and Russians released in the exchange had been held captive since various conflicts, including Ukraine’s takeover of the Azovstal steel plant in 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the return of soldiers, expressing gratitude to those involved.
The UAE, known for its mediation in such deals, hailed the successful exchange. The move comes amidst Russia’s advances in eastern Ukraine, where they claim to have captured various villages.
Despite escalating tensions between Russia and the West, the prisoner swap provides a glimmer of hope for resolving conflicts through diplomatic channels.
