Recent accusations have surfaced, accusing Russian-Israeli oligarch Leonid Nevzlin of orchestrating an attack on the late Russian opposition figure Leonid Volkov. The attack, which occurred in March outside Volkov’s home in Lithuania, left him seriously injured. The Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) founded by Alexey Navalny released a detailed investigation, claiming that Nevzlin wanted Volkov maimed or kidnapped for political reasons.
The FBK alleged that Nevzlin, through a lawyer, hired Polish thugs to carry out the attack, which he later refused to pay for due to dissatisfaction with the results. The organization revealed that a dispute over payment led to a rift between Nevzlin and the lawyer. Nevzlin, a former executive of dismantled Russian oil company Yukos, has been accused of conspiracy to murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia.
The motive for Nevzlin’s alleged plot remains unclear, but the FBK suggested it stems from political rivalry and personal animosity towards Navalny’s team. Nevzlin has vehemently denied the accusations, labeling them as Moscow’s propaganda. His close association with Mikhail Khodorkovsky, another prominent critic of the Russian government, further complicates the situation.
