Myanmar’s junta chief has requested foreign aid to help with deadly floods that have displaced hundreds of thousands of people amid ongoing conflict. Nearly 300 people have been killed in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand following Typhoon Yagi’s heavy rainfall. The junta reported over 235,000 people displaced by floods, adding to the country’s existing turmoil since the military takeover in 2021.
The need for rescue and relief aid was emphasized by Min Aung Hlaing to manage the crisis quickly. The military has reported a death toll of 33, with concerns of more casualties in landslides. Past instances of the junta hindering foreign aid have raised fears for the current situation. Military efforts are underway to assist those affected by providing rescue boats and aid.
The devastating floods have caused landslides and extensive damage, amplifying the challenges faced by the already displaced population due to previous conflicts. The appeal for foreign aid comes as a critical lifeline for the affected communities.
