Japan’s ruling party leadership contenders are looking to build on the wage growth momentum seen under current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. However, they have differing opinions on how to support households and the economy amidst rising prices.
Rising star Shinjiro Koizumi of the Liberal Democratic Party, a public favorite to succeed Kishida, plans to expand support for low-income households and pensioners through cash handouts. In contrast, other candidates like Takayuki Kobayashi and Taro Kono suggest targeted subsidies instead of broad financial assistance.
With a record nine contenders in the September 27 LDP leadership race, the focus is on revamping the party, boosting the economy, and addressing security and demographic challenges. The new party leader will inevitably become the next prime minister, given the LDP’s control of both houses of parliament and its coalition with the Komeito Party. The timing of a potential snap election will be a key point of interest.
