The Houthi Rebels Turned Cargo Ship into Tourist Attraction
The Houthi rebels, acting as Iran’s proxy in Yemen, seized the Galaxy Leader cargo ship in the Gulf in November 2023, transforming it into a spectacle by adorning it with flags and lights to celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. The ship, owned by Israeli Abraham Ungar’s company, “Ray,” was captured off the coast of Yemen while en route from Egypt to India. The rebels staged a takeover, garnering attention as visitors sail small boats to explore the ship, stomp on U.S. and Israeli flags, and revel in traditional Houthi songs.
Celebrating Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday
The holiday, held on the 12th day of the third month in the Islamic calendar, known as Rabiʽ al-Awwal, marks the beginning of spring. While not universally recognized, many Muslim communities commemorate the event with festivities, including hymns praising Allah and Muhammad.
Political Escalation and Condemnation
The Houthi actions have sparked international backlash, with the Prime Minister’s Office denouncing it as an Iranian-backed act of terrorism. The rebels have targeted Israeli ships, prompting fears of heightened tensions, as Iran attempts to challenge Israel’s position in the region.
