Tragedy Strikes in Haiti: More than 15 Killed in Tanker Truck Explosion
Interim Prime Minister Garry Conille confirmed that over 15 people lost their lives and about 40 were injured in a devastating explosion caused by a leaking petrol tanker truck in southern Haiti. The tragic incident occurred near Miragoane in the Nippes region.
Conille took to social media to express his solidarity with the victims and their families, as civil protection crews and officials were mobilized to the scene. Evacuations via helicopter were also planned for the injured.
The explosion happened while people were attempting to retrieve fuel leaking from the truck, leading to a chaotic and deadly situation. Witnesses described a harrowing scene where bystanders were severely injured or killed in the blast.
This is not the first such tragedy in Haiti, as the country has previously experienced deadly tanker truck explosions. The region has also been grappling with fuel shortages, worsened by ongoing gang violence in the area.
