An Extension for Peace: South Sudan’s Government Tenure
In a recent development, the National Council of Ministers in South Sudan has approved a 24-month extension of the current government’s tenure, as agreed upon by the parties involved in the conflict resolution agreement. This decision comes shortly after the postponement of the country’s first General Election since independence in 2011.
During an extraordinary meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir, Deputy Information, Communication, and Postal Service Minister Dr. Jacob Maiju Korok announced the endorsement of the agreement to delay the election and extend the transitional period. The election, initially scheduled for December 22, will now take place on December 22, 2026, allowing time for the implementation of critical tasks outlined in the Revitalized Peace Agreement.
The focus remains on maintaining peace, security, and political stability in South Sudan, with a commitment to ensure free, fair, and credible elections. By prioritizing the completion of all agreement articles, the parties aim to achieve lasting peace and prevent a return to conflict.
