Pressure Mounts on BNP-M Senators to Vote on Constitutional Package
The chief of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), Akhtar Mengal, has raised concerns that two senators from his party are being pressured to vote in favor of a proposed “constitutional package.” This package includes amendments to fix the tenure of the Chief Justice of Pakistan at three years.
Amidst the parliament sessions, with a short gap between both houses, the legislation is expected to be introduced today. Mengal alleged that the houses of the two BNP-M senators were being raided, and their families were facing threats and intimidation.
Opposition parties, including BNP-M and PTI, have warned their members of potential consequences if they support the proposed package. On the other hand, the ruling coalition is trying to secure the required number of votes for the amendment’s passage.
Despite efforts to maintain discipline within ranks, there are rumors of lawmakers willing to switch sides. The political landscape remains tense as parties strategize their moves regarding the crucial constitutional amendment.
