US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently called out Russian media outlet RT for being a tool used by the Russian government for covert operations against countries worldwide. Blinken highlighted RT’s cyber capabilities and its role in spreading disinformation to destabilize open societies. He urged allies to treat RT as they would any other intelligence activity conducted by Russia within their borders.
In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman mocked Blinken’s remarks, suggesting that the US create a new job position specializing in imposing sanctions against Russia. RT’s editor-in-chief also taunted the State Department ahead of Blinken’s statement, anticipating being labeled the world’s best spies.
RT, known for disseminating Kremlin propaganda, has faced scrutiny for its role in spreading misinformation globally. The State Department emphasized RT’s activities in Moldova, Argentina, France, Germany, and parts of Africa. They revealed that RT had a cyber entity embedded within it with ties to Russian intelligence, focusing on influence and intelligence operations worldwide.
Blinken condemned RT’s online crowd-funding program, which has provided military equipment to Russian units in Ukraine. The State Department highlighted RT’s involvement in the Russian government’s operations in Ukraine, emphasizing the need to counter their propaganda efforts effectively.
