The World Health Organization (WHO) chief is calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza after deadly Israeli airstrikes targeted a “safe zone” for displaced civilians. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned the attack on tents in Khan Younis, stating that such places should be safe havens for the vulnerable.
The airstrikes in Khan Younis resulted in at least 40 deaths and numerous injuries, with refugee tents set ablaze and deep craters left behind. Tedros emphasized the need for a ceasefire, pointing out that medical efforts are futile if people are being killed and forced to live in dire conditions.
Despite the violence, a polio vaccination campaign was launched in north Gaza, with deliveries of vaccines, equipment, and fuel to support health workers and essential services. Tedros called for humanitarian pauses to be respected, stressing that the children in Gaza deserve lasting peace and not just vaccines.
Israel’s actions in Gaza have led to widespread suffering, hunger, displacement, and disease. Efforts to negotiate peace continue with mediators, but a resolution remains elusive.
