Recent reports reveal that journalists and politicians in Tunisian prisons are facing medical neglect and abusive treatment ahead of the upcoming presidential election. The National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) raised concerns about Mohamed Boughalleb’s deteriorating health due to lack of essential medical care while imprisoned since March. Similarly, Sonia Dahmani and Chadha Hadj Mbarek experienced violations of their physical integrity and dignity while detained.
The Free Destourian Party (PDL) demanded proper medical care for its imprisoned president, Abir Moussi, citing deliberate medical negligence. Rights groups and the US State Department have condemned prison conditions in Tunisia, highlighting abuse and inadequate healthcare. The death of psychiatrist Mohamed Hajji in prison underscored the dangerous lack of medical attention provided to inmates.
President Kais Saied’s consolidation of power through measures like dissolving parliament and excluding opposition candidates for the upcoming election has drawn criticism. Ennahda party members, including leader Rached Ghannouchi, have also been targeted in what is seen as an escalation campaign against the opposition.
