Venezuela’s government issues warning to Spain over “interference” as tensions rise between the two countries. Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles labeled President Nicolas Maduro’s government a “dictatorship,” prompting the recall of Venezuela’s ambassador. The US also sanctioned 16 Maduro allies for alleged “election fraud.”
Foreign Minister Yvan Gil of Venezuela expressed that Caracas will not tolerate any Spanish government interference and will take necessary steps to protect its sovereignty. The head of Venezuela’s parliament even called for severing ties with Spain. Meanwhile, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares emphasized that it is Venezuela’s right to recall its ambassador, underscoring Madrid’s efforts to maintain relations.
On a separate note, Spanish lawmakers voted to recognize opposition figure Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the “legitimate winner” of the July 28 election. This move reflects the ongoing political turmoil in Venezuela amid disputed election results. Gonzalez sought refuge in Spain after Venezuela issued an arrest warrant.
