US warns RT is directly involved in Russian intel ops

The U.S. State Department recently issued a warning about Russian state-run media outlet RT, revealing its involvement in spreading propaganda and misinformation. Not only that, but RT has been identified as an entity with cyber capabilities, engaging in information operations, covert influence, and military procurement globally.

The warning comes amidst concerns of Russia planning information campaigns to sow division in U.S. society and undermine support for Ukraine in swing states during the upcoming presidential race. The U.S. announced sanctions and seized internet domains linked to Kremlin propaganda, targeting high-profile propagandists working for RT.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that RT and its subsidiaries are no longer just disseminating propaganda but are actively involved in covert influence activities aimed at undermining American elections and democracies. The State Department has designated them under the Foreign Missions Act, requiring them to report all personnel and property in the U.S.

Despite efforts to avoid restricting free speech, the U.S. will not tolerate covert activities supporting Russia’s nefarious intentions. The warning extends to a crowdfunding program assisting Russian military units in Ukraine. This development shows the escalating tensions and challenges posed by Russian propaganda in the global media landscape.
