US to await results of Israel’s investigation into killing of Turkish-American activist before deciding on consequences
The US State Department announced on Friday that they will wait for the conclusion of Israel’s investigation into the killing of Turkish-American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi before determining if any consequences are warranted for the Israeli soldiers involved. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller emphasized the need for a thorough, prompt, and transparent investigation and stated that any determinations will be made at the conclusion of the investigation.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called for changes to Israeli security forces’ rules of engagement in response to reports of excessive use of force. Eygi, a 26-year-old dual Turkish-US national, was killed during a peaceful protest against illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Her family believes she was targeted and is calling for an independent US investigation.
Eygi, who recently graduated from the University of Washington, had traveled to the West Bank to volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement. The discrepancies in the Israeli army’s initial findings raise concerns about the circumstances of her tragic death.
