The US State Department accuses Russia’s RT network of covert operations, cyber capabilities, and military procurement.
The US has imposed new sanctions on Russia’s state media outlet RT, alleging involvement in covert “influence and intelligence operations” worldwide and supplying weapons to the Russian military. The US State Department declared that RT, now known as Russia Today, has evolved beyond a media outlet to possess cyber capabilities and engage in information warfare, covert influence, and military acquisitions targeting various regions globally.
The sanctions are part of a broader response to strained US-Russian relations, particularly in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Biden administration has consistently criticized Putin’s regime and imposed multiple sanctions on Russian entities. Accusations of election interference have also been leveled against Russia.
The US alleges that RT has established fake news websites to spread disinformation and propaganda, along with enhancing cyber operations linked to Russian intelligence. Despite these claims, Russia’s embassy in Washington has yet to respond to the allegations. RT, however, responded sarcastically when questioned by CNN.
