UK govt won’t fund Casement Park redevelopment for Euros

The UK government has announced that they will not fund the redevelopment of Casement Park in time for the Euro 2028 football tournament. The derelict west Belfast ground was supposed to host five matches in the tournament, jointly hosted by the UK and Ireland. The estimated cost for the project has risen to £400 million, causing the government to reconsider their support.

In a joint letter to Northern Ireland Communities Minister Gordon Lyons, Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy expressed their regret in making this decision. They emphasized their commitment to working with partners and Uefa to ensure a positive impact of the tournament on all four home nations.

The UK government will engage with stakeholders to discuss the future of Casement Park and the best way forward. Despite the setback, they are determined to create a legacy for football and the communities involved.
