The Crisis in Balochistan: A Call for Meaningful Dialogue
The security situation in Balochistan is deteriorating rapidly, and experts are sounding the alarm on the government’s failure to engage in meaningful dialogue with Baloch dissidents. The prolonged deadlock is pushing insurgents towards extreme violence, highlighting the urgent need for a negotiated settlement.
The Islamabad Policy Institute recently hosted a roundtable discussion on Balochistan’s escalating crisis, where Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed criticized the government’s inaction on key reports that could empower the province politically and economically. He also highlighted missed opportunities for resolving issues like missing persons.
To address these challenges, Mr. Syed proposed a five-point plan, including implementing existing reports and strengthening regional security ties. Dr. Shireen Mazari raised concerns about the government’s security-focused approach, emphasizing the need to involve local communities in projects like CPEC.
Abdul Basit discussed the concept of relative deprivation among Baloch students, while Dr. Maria Malik called for demilitarization and respect for Balochistan’s unique identity.
As the crisis deepens, it is clear that a new approach is needed to prevent further escalation and seek a lasting solution for stability in Balochistan.
