Sweden is offering to increase payments to immigrants who choose to leave the country, a significant move by the right-wing government. The Scandinavian nation, once known as a “humanitarian superpower”, has faced challenges with integrating its newcomers over the years.
Starting in 2026, immigrants who volunteer to return to their home countries will be eligible to receive up to 350,000 Swedish kronor (USD34,000). This shift in migration policy, according to Migration Minister Johan Forssell, marks a significant change in approach.
Currently, immigrants can receive up to 10,000 kronor per adult and 5,000 kronor per child, with a family cap of 40,000 kronor. The government’s decision, supported by the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, aims to address the ongoing challenges related to immigration in the country.
