SIU authorized to investigate Gama’s Transnet reinstatement

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently signed a proclamation granting the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) the authority to investigate allegations of serious maladministration within Transnet. The investigation will focus on Siyabonga Gama’s reinstatement as CEO of Transnet Freight Rail in 2011, as well as the payment of his legal costs post-reinstatement. Additionally, the SIU will look into a security services contract aimed at preventing criminal activities against Transnet Freight Rail, awarded to Abalozi Security Risk Advisory Services (Pty) Ltd.

Ramaphosa also approved three other proclamations allowing the SIU to investigate maladministration within the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, Umzumbe Local Municipality, and Masilonyana Local Municipality. These investigations aim to recover any financial losses incurred by the state and identify systemic failures to prevent future losses.

According to SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago, the investigations will not only target maladministration, corruption, and fraud but also provide recommendations for preventing future losses.
