Russia’s Security Council head Sergei Shoigu recently met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, following a defense pact signed between Moscow and Pyongyang. This meeting comes at a critical time as Russia continues its offensive in Ukraine while facing accusations from the West of receiving arms from North Korea.
The mutual defense pact between Russia and North Korea, signed during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in June, was discussed during the meeting. The security council stated that the discussions were held in a positive atmosphere, building on the bilateral agreements reached previously.
Despite criticism from Western countries and South Korea regarding the defense pact, Russia and North Korea are forging closer ties. This alignment is significant, given the historical relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang, with recent developments reshaping their diplomatic dynamics.
