Senegal’s President dissolves opposition-led parliament, paving the way for snap elections
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal has made the bold decision to dissolve the opposition-led parliament, citing difficulties in working with the assembly to bring about promised reforms. The move comes just six months after Faye’s election on an anti-establishment platform.
Faye expressed frustration with the assembly’s refusal to engage in discussions on the budget law and reluctance to dissolve inefficient state institutions. In a statement, he declared the need for “systemic transformation” and announced snap elections scheduled for November 17.
Observers anticipate Faye’s party, PASTEF, to secure a majority due to his popularity and the significant victory margin in the past presidential election. However, the dissolution has faced criticism from the opposition platform led by former President Macky Sall, accusing Faye of deception.
Despite promising reforms to uplift Senegalese living standards, frustrations have arisen with the lack of progress. Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko blame the parliament for hindering their efforts, causing delays in fulfilling campaign pledges.
