Russia recently discharged 45 misled Indian nationals who were unknowingly fighting in the war against Ukraine, with efforts being made to release an additional 50 soldiers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened after four Indians lost their lives in the conflict, highlighting the issue to Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Moscow in July.
The victims were lured to Russia by human traffickers promising job opportunities or placements in questionable universities. In response, Indian authorities arrested four individuals involved in the trafficking network after conducting raids in 13 locations across the country. Similarly, Sri Lanka reported arrests in connection to at least 16 citizens who were deceived into joining the Russian military.
Despite the significant developments, Russian officials have not provided any comments on the release of Indian soldiers serving in the military. The situation underscores the critical need to combat human trafficking and ensure the safety of individuals vulnerable to exploitation.
