In a tense session at the United Nations Security Council, the Russian envoy issued a warning that allowing Ukraine to use long-range missiles in Russia would escalate to direct war with Moscow. Germany, on the other hand, stood firm in its decision not to provide Kyiv with such weapons.
Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia emphasized the serious implications of NATO countries supporting Ukraine in such actions. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated Germany’s stance against sending long-range missiles to Ukraine despite discussions among Western powers.
As the US and UK considered permitting Kyiv to use Western-provided long-range missiles, tensions heightened between the countries. Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned that such a move would signal NATO’s war with Moscow, while Germany continued to withhold its long-range missiles due to fears of worsening the conflict.
Although Germany has been a significant military aid provider to Ukraine, it plans to reduce its budget for aid next year. Despite facing internal pressures, Scholz’s government remains committed to supporting Ukraine in line with international law.
