President Cyril Ramaphosa recently signed the Basic Education Laws Amendment (Bela) Bill, with a delay in implementing certain clauses to allow for further discussion and proposals on contentious issues. Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of collaboration among government, school bodies, and parents for the benefit of South Africa’s children.
The new law makes Grade R compulsory, improves school admission policies, regulates homeschooling, and reinforces the ban on corporal punishment. It aims to promote inclusivity and uniform educational standards across all schools.
Ramaphosa expressed enthusiasm about the Government of National Unity (GNU) and its potential to lead development and transformation in the country. Despite threats from the DA to challenge the bill in court, Ramaphosa remains optimistic about the unity and progress achievable through the GNU partnership.
