South Sudan Delays National Elections to 2026
South Sudan’s collegial presidency, led by President Salva Kiir, has postponed the national election to December 2026. Originally planned for December 2024, the two-year extension was announced due to challenges in implementing the 2018 peace agreement.
The delay signals ongoing difficulties in the country’s fragile peace process. The presidency, consisting of President Kiir and four vice presidents, cited the need to address critical tasks like the permanent constitution process and census before holding elections.
Cabinet Affairs Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro stressed the importance of completing these tasks for successful elections. The government will continue to operate during the extension period to ensure the effective implementation of the peace agreement.
Despite criticism for lackluster implementation, the parties involved have agreed to extend the transitional period to address outstanding issues. This delay aims to foster long-term peace and stability in South Sudan.
