Controversial former President Alberto Fujimori’s death sparks national mourning in Peru.
The government of Peru has declared a three-day period of national mourning following the passing of former President Alberto Fujimori. Despite being convicted of corruption and human rights abuses during his time in office, President Dina Boluarte signed a decree for the mourning period. Fujimori died at his daughter Keiko Fujimori’s home in Lima.
Photos shared on social media show supporters lining up outside the Ministry of Culture in Lima to pay their respects before Fujimori’s burial at a cemetery south of the capital. He is polarizing even in death, with some praising his economic reforms and efforts to combat the Shining Path rebels, while others condemn his authoritarianism and human rights abuses.
Shining Path rebels
Fujimori’s legacy includes a brutal counterinsurgency campaign against the Maoist guerilla group, Shining Path, resulting in significant human rights violations. His administration also implemented forced sterilizations targeting Indigenous and poor women.
Montesinos scandal
After fleeing to Japan in 2000 amidst a bribery scandal involving his intelligence chief, Vladimiro Montesinos, Fujimori was extradited to Peru in 2007. He was convicted in 2009 for crimes related to death squads and was controversially released from prison in 2023. Schisms within Peruvian society persist regarding Fujimori’s complex legacy.
#FujimoriNuncaMas and #FujimoriPorSiempre reflect the ongoing debate surrounding Fujimori’s rule, as his daughter Keiko hinted at a political resurgence even after his passing.
