Peru Mourns Former President Alberto Fujimori
Peru has begun three days of national mourning to honor the legacy of former President Alberto Fujimori, who passed away in Lima. Despite his controversial rule from 1990 to 2000, Fujimori was granted a pardon last December and released from prison where he was serving a sentence for human rights abuses and corruption.
His coffin will lie in state at the Ministry of Culture, allowing the public to pay their respects. Fujimori’s complicated legacy includes stabilizing the economy, defeating communist rebels, but also facing charges of corruption and human rights violations.
His political career ended in disgrace with allegations of bribery and abuse of power, leading to his self-imposed exile and eventual imprisonment. However, following a humanitarian pardon, Fujimori left prison due to health reasons.
