The Netherlands has announced its strictest asylum policy, with plans to seek an opt-out from the EU asylum policy. The coalition government, led by far-right MP Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party, aims to address the “asylum crisis” by implementing tough rules, including border controls.
Prime Minister Schoof emphasized the need to manage the large influx of migrants and vowed to introduce emergency measures to make migration and asylum processes stricter. The government plans to expedite the departure of ineligible asylum seekers and streamline the application process.
Despite the challenges in negotiating an opt-out from the EU asylum system, the Dutch government is determined to follow in Denmark’s footsteps. Legal experts caution that such a move would require unanimous agreement from all EU member states.
Additional strategies unveiled include addressing housing shortages, reducing nitrogen output, and potentially expanding oil and gas drilling in the North Sea. The government also proposed the construction of new nuclear reactors to meet energy demands.
