Gunmen Kill 15 Civilians in Central Afghanistan, Islamic State Claims Responsibility

Tragedy struck in central Afghanistan as gunmen targeted a group of civilians, killing 15 and injuring six others. The local chapter of the Islamic State group, known as Amaq, claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident in Daykundi province saw unknown gunmen open fire on a group welcoming pilgrims back from a Shia holy site in Iraq.

While overall attacks in Afghanistan have decreased following the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, threats persist from groups like Islamic State-Khorasan. The Taliban government has downplayed the group’s influence, but recent events suggest otherwise.

IS-K has a history of targeting Shias, whom they consider heretics, and poses a significant external terrorist threat. A UN official warned of the group’s increased capabilities in Europe, despite reassurances from Taliban officials.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by civilians in Afghanistan and the persistent threat of extremist groups in the region.
