Irish man, 29, found dead in Portugal under investigation

Authorities in Portugal are investigating the death of a 29-year-old Irish man who took his own life while in custody after being arrested for a serious assault. The incident occurred in Albufeira, a popular resort city in the Algarve region.

The man’s partner, also 29, was the victim of the alleged assault and was treated for stab wounds at a local hospital before being discharged. The couple had travelled to Albufeira for a social event.

The Portuguese National Republican Guard is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. However, due to strict secrecy laws in Portugal, details about the case may be limited.

Authorities in Portugal have emphasized that an inquiry and autopsy will be conducted, with the findings to be reviewed by public prosecutors. Depending on the outcome, further investigations may be carried out by the Polícia Judiciária, the country’s national criminal investigation agency.
