Investigation Launched into Police Officer Advising Nigerian Women Against Reporting Abuse
A recently resurfaced video from 2018 showing a Metropolitan Police officer telling Nigerian women not to call the police on their husbands but to “manage it” has sparked outrage and is now under investigation. The clip, filmed inside a church in Camberwell, shows the officer speaking in Yoruba and English, suggesting that women should not report abuse but handle it internally. This advice has drawn criticism from abuse charities and community groups.
Debbie Ariyo, CEO of Afruca, expressed her anger upon seeing the video, highlighting the dangers of domestic violence and the impact on victims, particularly Black women. The officer’s remarks have been reported to the Met’s standards unit, leading to an investigation into the incident.
Chief Executive Debbie Ariyo emphasized the importance of supporting victims of domestic abuse, regardless of cultural practices or personal relationships. The Met’s Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh stated that the officer’s comments do not represent the police force’s stance on domestic violence and affirmed the need to report such incidents for proper intervention.
