UNHCR and South Sudan Government Seek Space to Accommodate Refugees in Morobo County
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Government of South Sudan are working together to find space to accommodate refugees fleeing conflict in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Sudan. A meeting was held with local authorities in Central Equatoria State’s Morobo County to address the continuous influx of refugees and asylum seekers, especially from Sudan.
The Assistant Commissioner for Refugees Affairs emphasized the need to find suitable areas to accommodate refugees in the greater Yei area, as many refugees prefer to be transferred there. The Executive Director of Morobo County acknowledged UNHCR’s efforts in the county and hopes for continued cooperation in providing services and support to the refugee population.
Local leaders, such as County Commissioner Data Charles, recognize the positive impact refugees can have on the social and economic development of an area. As the government and humanitarian partners seek to accommodate the increasing number of refugees, consultations with the host community are essential for successful integration and development.
Since the outbreak of war in Sudan, hundreds of thousands of people have crossed into South Sudan, prompting the need for more welcoming spaces to host refugees. The cooperation between UNHCR, the South Sudan government, and local authorities is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by the influx of refugees.
