Disparaging a culture through its cuisine is a longstanding American practice.

Accusations of bizarre eating habits against immigrant and minority communities have a long history in America, with the latest example being false claims about Haitian immigrants in Ohio eating dogs and cats. These food-based insults are a way of othering and dehumanizing these communities, perpetuating racist stereotypes. Examples of such discrimination have been seen against Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Italian, Indian, Mexican, and African American communities over the years.

Food is deeply intertwined with culture, making it a convenient target for ethnic hatred and political exploitation. Insults can also stem from how food is consumed, such as eating with hands or chopsticks. Despite the expanding American palate and greater access to diverse cuisines, stereotypes persist.

Immigrant communities bring their food traditions with them, adding richness to the culinary landscape. While attitudes towards food may evolve, tolerance and understanding of diverse cultures are often lacking. Enjoying a foreign cuisine does not necessarily translate to acceptance of immigrants or diversity.

Food is a powerful symbol of identity and community, reflecting who we are. It’s time to move beyond harmful stereotypes and embrace the diversity and richness that immigrant communities bring to American society.
