City roads in Karachi are in ruins after recent rains, prompting the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to begin repair work on streets under its control. Despite concerns raised by Mayor Murtaza Wahab, the World Bank-funded Competitive and Liveable City of Karachi (CLICK) project has remained silent on the deteriorating road conditions. The CLICK authorities have failed to respond to the KMC’s concerns about the sustainability and quality of the infrastructure development.
Mayor Wahab raised questions about the performance of the CLICK project after over a dozen roads rehabilitated by the program were destroyed in the rains. The KMC officials have not received any response from the CLICK authorities regarding these concerns. The repair and rehabilitation of damaged roads under KMC’s control have begun with an estimated budget of Rs2 billion, including repair of sewerage lines and road carpeting. The KMC has hired National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) for transparency and quality control in the operations.
The Sindh government, with the World Bank Group’s assistance, launched the CLICK project in 2020 to bring radical reforms in infrastructure and improve the city’s local government delivery system.
