The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $320 million loan to support the rehabilitation and safety enhancement of rural roads in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rural Roads Development Project aims to upgrade approximately 900 kilometers of roads that are prone to floods and in poor condition, connecting remote communities to essential services.
The project includes measures to integrate climate-resilient design, improve road safety, and promote sustainable maintenance practices. ADB Director General for Central and West Asia, Yevgeniy Zhukov, emphasized the project’s potential to reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and increase economic opportunities for millions of residents in KP.
The initiative will empower local communities, drive inclusive economic growth, and enhance the province’s road network’s climate resilience and sustainability. ADB’s commitment to improving infrastructure in Pakistan dates back to 1966, with over $52 billion financing to support economic growth, infrastructure development, energy security, and social services.
