Violent protests in Melbourne as anti-Israel activists clash with police

Anti-Israel Protesters Arrested in Melbourne After Clashes with Police

Dozens of anti-Israel protesters were arrested in Melbourne, Australia, after clashing with police outside a conference hall hosting an arms expo. The protesters threw rocks, tomatoes, and even acid at the police, injuring at least 24 officers and some convention participants.

The police responded with tear gas, stun grenades, and rubber bullets to control the situation. Around 40 protesters were arrested for assault, arson, and obstruction. The demonstration was organized by Students for Palestine and Disrupt Wars groups, and although the organizers expected 25,000 attendees, only about 1,200 showed up.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton defended the police’s actions, stating that the protesters were prepared for conflict and calling them “hypocrites.” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged protesters to respect the police and protest peacefully without resorting to violence.

Jasmine Duff from Students for Palestine criticized the police for using what she considered excessive force, including chemical weapons and rubber bullets, on peaceful activists. The clashes mark one of the largest police deployments since the 2000 World Economic Forum held in Melbourne.
